The Quarantine Questionnaire: Haley Green

Haley Green 01

Haley Green

With live music events in the Phoenix area being largely on hold for the moment, we wanted a fun way to highlight local artists that could still use some community support so we came up with the Quarantine Questionnaire!! See how some of your local favorites answered our (sometimes silly) questions and what things you can do to support them (like buying albums and merch).

Who are you and are you in a band or do you perform solo? If in a band(s), what is the name of that band?

Haley Green. I have an incredible 4-piece band together currently, perform with Scattered Melodies, and also play solo/duo/trio acoustic all over the valley (pre-COVID of course).

What instrument(s) do you play?

I sing, play guitar, and most recently have gotten into percussion over the past couple years.

How long have you been making music? And what first drew you to your craft?

I played the flute in 4th and 5th grade but didn’t really get into creating music until I picked up a guitar at 14. My school had guitar as an elective and my friends had signed up so my dad found me a pawn shop guitar and was basically addicted from day one. My new group of musical friends encouraged me to try singing, and after a very slow intro over a couple months of open mic visits, I started playing guitar + singing on my own. There was one year when I was about 19 where I didn’t play any music (not a good year) but once I picked it back up I started writing original songs for the first time and haven’t been able to stop.

What was your favorite show of all the shows you’ve ever played?

This most recent one, our live stream at Last Exit is up there. With all of our gigs collectively getting cancelled and venues closing their doors it was such a special experience for my band to have a couple hours of ‘normal life’ and to share it with so many people!! We had about 5,000 viewers by the end of our set and being able to connect with that many people feels amazing. I also got to give it up to the 10 year anniversary of Apache Lake Music Festival – playing out in the open air to that valley is unforgettable.

What would be your dream lineup/location?

Oh man . . . Playing Red Rocks is a goal I want to achieve some day. I can barely even imagine but if we got to share a bill at Red Rocks with Tedeschi Trucks and Tom Misch I could just die happy right there.

What are you listening to during this period of social distancing?

So many things!! I can let NPR tiny desk concerts go for hours.

Here are a few songs on my heavy Spotify rotation these days:
“That Woman (Conco Sanchez Remix)” by Euforquestra feat. Alan Evans
“Eternal Light” by Free Nationals, Chronixx
“Turnin’ Me Up” by BJ the Chicago Kid
“Selfish” by Jordan Rakei

Haley Green 03What are you binge watching/reading?

I just finished all the “Better Call Saul” episodes on Netflix and started “Breaking Bad” from scratch… I kind of want to read Stephen King’s “The Stand” again since it might make all this craziness feel a little less scary. Definitely avoiding the news.

What else are you doing with these extra hours at home? Extra creative time?

I have been mostly working from home for a few years already so my day to day hasn’t changed much, but I definitely am getting more creative and re-exploring some of my favorite handcrafted projects. Beyond getting some more songwriting time in, I make paper plants & flowers, hand embroidered felt gnomes & coloring book pages that live on my Etsy store: Zen Ziggy Art. Cancelled gigs are hurting my heart and wallet for sure, but all the open nights have been really wonderful to let me catch up on normal adulting things and getting my life a little bit more together. As a recovering work-a-holic who always has 3+ jobs, the extra rest and open time to just exist has been really nice.

If you could Facetime/Skype anyone in the world for an extended convo right now, who would it be? Facetime or Skype?

Are you facilitating this? Can you get Tom Misch on a Skype call with me to do some songwriting?? Seriously though, I’m hoping to get some Facetime in with extended family in Washington and Missouri soon.

Favorite food you can make at home?

I cook about 90% of my meals at home already! Currently eating a tiny pan of enchiladas, but I usually live on some rice + a metric ton of garlic + whatever random veggies I have on hand and maybe a piece of fish. Or tacos. There’s a lot of tacos in my immediate future.

Are you currently working on any new musical projects? If so, what?

So many!! My incredible band has been coming up with new song ideas almost weekly at rehearsals that I am working on lyrics/melodies for and we are hoping to get into the studio soon to lay down an EP. Beyond ‘my’ band, my extended music familia Scattered Melodies, Billy Sutherland & Killa Maus are all recording killer new tunes this summer. I have been working on some vocal features with some other amazing artists but we have them on the DL for now 😉

Haley Green 02How can folx support your musical endeavors? Can people check out or purchase your work online? What other options might be available?

My website is a great place to start — HaleyGreenMusic.com — I have t-shirts for sale and hopefully will have some additional merch soon. I also have a VIP group you can join on the site to receive regular newsletters from me + exclusive content and I plan to be doing more live streaming in the coming weeks so stay tuned to social media for those updates.

I have a couple singles up for sale on Bandcamp.
