The Tastemaker’s Ten: Paulina Rios aka DJ Paul Bearer

Paulina Rios might be better known around the Valley as DJ Paul Bearer, the host of an array of eclectic music events like Rude Night at Yucca Tap Room or the kickback 90s dance event, Live & Learn, at Tempe Tavern or maybe even So Below, a monthly metal night, at Cornish Pasty. Whatever your style, Rios might be the music hound to help you meet your needs. She is also the co-host of Spooky Nerds, a local podcast that celebrates a love of alcohol and weird shit simultaneously. Come on, you know that sounds awesome. Despite her busy schedule, she took the time to pick out ten tracks she thinks everyone should hear for our Tastemaker’s Ten and her complete list, along with an explanation for each, can be found below…

Jawbreaker
“Accident Prone”

Hands down, one of my favorite songs in the WORLD. “What’s the furthest place from here?// It hasn’t been my day// for a couple of years// what’s a couple more?” When I first heard that line, I was like “this is insane.”

Foundation
“Devotion II”

Have you ever heard a song that made you want to punch yourself in the face? Because this is it. I went all the way to Chicago to see this band’s final show because I missed it in LA.

Cuco
“Lo Que Siento”

Currently obsessed with everything this kid has put out. He has a nice LA low rider oldies feel. Like, you would be cruising in your old car on a nice day or drinking a 40 with your friends on a stoop.

Bouncing Souls
“Hopeless Romantic”

I got my first tattoo with these song lyrics and this band’s logo so, that says enough.

Kali Uchis
“Honey Baby”

Kali Uchis is a POWERHOUSE. She is SO good.

Amigo the Devil
“Perfect Wife”

If you have never seen Amigo, you are messing up. He puts on such a great and raw performance. Plus Murder Folk is just a great genre that he made up.

Motorhead & Girlschool
“Please Don’t Touch”

EVERYTHING LOUDER THAN EVERYTHING ELSE. Motorhead and Girlschool are the greatest bands of all time and the fact that they have a whole album together is AMAZING.

Gang Green
“Alcohol”

This song just really gets me, you know?

Heroes Del Silencio
“Entre Dos Tierras”

This song is what made me like alt music when I was a wee lad who didn’t speak English. Those outfits, they’re soooo good too.

Amy Winehouse
“Back to Black”

Listen, I cry about Amy Winehouse at least 2-3 times a month. I still remember the first time I ever heard her, it stopped me dead in my tracks. Legend.
