Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Jamie Pettis and I am the artist-owner behind Brazen Wolf Art and Apparel. Through this brand, I create art via painting and drawing. In addition, I transfer some of this art to apparel and sell in various stores across the United States as well as online. I consider myself to be a street artist and categorize my apparel under ‘Streetwear’.
How did you get your start?
I got my start as a child in my dad’s upstairs art studio in downtown Holdenville, Oklahoma (population: 5,795). My dad is an artist (and lawyer) and was working heavily with oil pastels at the time. I believe he started me with colored pencils.
What inspires you?
I’m inspired by a number of things. I love underground hiphop artists who speak their truth and talk about where they came from. I connect with this at times. I’m inspired by music in general. Music moves me when I paint; it makes sense. And I don’t have the words to describe just HOW it makes sense. I am also inspired by human equality and connection. I love to paint people and, therefore, paint ALL people. Through my paintings of people, I hope to connect with my viewers, learn something about them, and/or something new in general that I can take with me. And, of course, I hope for them to get the same from me and my art.
What do you like about AZ?
What do I like about AZ? I like the sunsets. I also like the mystery of the desert even though it’s not my favorite type of land. My dad used to take us to Death Valley all of the time as kids and the desert is in me somehow. I’m just not sure how or why yet. And I like how sometimes I might see a hot air balloon pop up in the distance somewhere. Hot air balloons brought me to Phoenix, and they told me I am exactly where I need to be. But that’s a story for another time.
Where can we see you(r) work?
You can see my work at the following places:
Made Art Boutique in Phoenix, AZ
DNA Galleries in Oklahoma City, OK
Graphite in Oklahoma City, OK
Stash in Norman, OK
What would you like to accomplish before you die?
What would I like to accomplish before I die? I would like for the world to know about Brazen Wolf, and maybe own a shirt or two. Or a piece of art…or both!! And more than anything, I want Brazen Wolf to connect people and allow us to boldly be who we are in our territories.
What is your mantra?
My mantra is “Sit in the truth.” The Brazen Wolf mantra is “Shameless Territory, Shameless Wear”.
