Who are you and what do you do?

I am Cherie Buck-Hutchison and I am an interdisciplinary artist, poet, and currently co-president of the downtown Phoenix collective Eye Lounge.

How did you get your start?

I have always made art; I was the kid in class getting in trouble for drawing while the teacher was talking.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by opening my mind up to possibility and imagination. I think one feeds the other.

What do you like about AZ?

I love catching a glimpse of a great horned owl watching for mice as bats dip at moths around the streets lights, the amazing weather coupled with air conditioning and the amazing, welcoming art community.

Cherie Buck-Hutchison 05Where can we see you(r) work?

My work will be showing from April 17th through May 10, 2015 at eye lounge Gallery at 419 East Roosevelt St. The exhibition is titled Adit’s Ode: A Modest Revolt. It is a poetic walk-through exhibition.

What would you like to accomplish before you die?

Before I die, I would like to develop a nonprofit organization to support women artists in the metropolitan Phoenix area. I would like to think I spoke out and made a difference regarding the health problems in the US and women’s issues within hierarchies of power. And of course, I must make more art as that is my means of communication!

What is your mantra?

I have a quote on my computer that my daughter wrote on a sticky note: “Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.” Unfortunately, I do not know who said that. My other mantra is a quote from Rumi, “Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
