I Saw The Haymarket Squares In My Underwear

by Frank Ippolito

Not really. But close. OK, I was fully clothed from the waist down. OK, I was completely dressed. Now that we have the state of my dress all clear, I actually saw the Haymarket Squares perform in Dust Circuit Radio’s studio while in a Google Hangout.

On most broadcast days, DCR will start a hangout. Usually it’s with Ziggy Kennedy host of High Noon that’s, well, at high noon every day.

During the Unknown Show on Wednesdays at 7pm, DCR opens up their studio to local bands and solo artists to perform live for their listening Internet and Google Hangout audience. The show is also simulcast on AM1670 – Dewberry Jam Community Radio in San Antonio, Texas.

The first time I saw the Haymarket Squares was in a church parking lot for fundraiser. They had just released their Punk Grass for the People album. It was in the dead of August and it was hot. It was sweaty. It was loads of fun.

Since then, they have released Dancing in the Streets in June of 2010 and are currently touring and supporting their latest release, Righteous Ruckus.

Listen to Righteous Ruckus here.

As the show started, I pulled up a chair at my dining table and there I was – front row at the show with other Squares’ fans Carol Pacey of Carol Pacey and the Honeyshakers, a regular Google Hangout’er, Jason Marsee and Ken Young, as well as our host for the evening, Ziggy Kennedy.

The Haymarket Squares played a rousing set of many of my favorites, showcasing some new songs, along with dropping an “F” bomb, but the highlight of my night was their muy awesome cover of Pink Floyd’s “Hey You”. And let me tell you there is nothing like this cover anywhere… especially once you add the psychedelic accordion lead.

Thanks to the Haymarket Squares for performing and to Dust Circuit Radio for continuing to support and expose local music to the Valley and beyond.
