1. Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Tracy Perkins. I make soap and other natural vegan bath & body goodies in Central Phoenix for my company Strawberry Hedgehog. I also teach Geologic Disasters and the Environment to wonderful college students, garden, and have a fabulous furry family of rescues.
2. How did you get your start?
I started out in about 2003 making products for myself when I realized I was reacting poorly to conventional products. I quickly learned what the active ingredients were in products and sort of intuitively put things together. By 2007 gifts for friends and friends of friends grew to an actual business out of my home and in October of 2011 I moved from my tiny home kitchen into a “factory space” in a 1950’s home near 7th Ave and Camelback called the Mariposa Longhouse.
I am inspired by my senses and how I experience nature. Playing in my garden, smelling, touching, tasting different herbs and flowers I grow. Flavors and scents of delicious teas and vegan foods. Different scents, flavors and experiences from the past: camping, hiking, playing outdoors.
4. What do you like about Arizona?
I have lived here for more than 20 years and I love it, it is my Home. Arizona inspires me. For its awesome geologic beauty and ecological diversity. For the resilience and strength of our plants and animals thriving through heat and drought.
5. Where can people see your work?
Emerge Acupuncture and Here on the Corner in Tempe, Residence Inn Desert View in Scottsdale, and all of the Arizona Whole Foods locations in the bulk soap section.
6. What would you like to accomplish before you die?
I would like to make an impact on the people around me to help us better grasp the connection between one another, our impact on all life through each decision and behavior, and the power we have to make positive change.
7. What’s your mantra?
So many it is difficult to choose but my favorite for Strawberry Hedgehog is, “what goes on your body is just as important as what goes in it.”
